Have you ever wondered if your passions could lead you to a deeper purpose? For me, this wasn’t just a question—it was a matter of survival and transformation. My name is Shawn O’Neill, author of The Divine Set Up: From Prison to Pulpit, and my story is proof that passion can help us uncover and live out our purpose, even in the darkest times.
Let me share how I found purpose through passion and the lessons I’ve learned, supported by insights from research.
Passion: A Compass Toward Purpose

Passion has always been my guidepost, pointing me toward a greater purpose. Research from Taylor & Francis (2024) confirms this: people who follow their passions report greater fulfillment and alignment with their values.
Passion acts as a compass, guiding us toward what truly matters.
For me, this realization came while I was in prison. I had hit rock bottom, but in the darkness, I began to write and reflect. That’s when I rediscovered my passion for storytelling and connecting with people through faith and truth. My struggles weren’t the end—they were the beginning of a new and purposeful journey.
The Power of Flow

Another way I uncovered my purpose was through “flow,” a state of effortless engagement where time seems to disappear. Research in The Irish Journal of Sociology (2024) highlights that flow is a key indicator of purpose, bringing fulfillment and energy.
I experienced flow for the first time in prison, leading Bible studies with fellow inmates. Time stood still when I shared God’s word. It felt so natural—like I was doing exactly what I was meant to do.
Those moments gave me hope and direction, showing me how passion could light the path forward.
Passion as Fuel for Transformation

Passion didn’t just help me find my purpose—it gave me the energy to pursue it. A 2024 study confirms that passion fuels resilience, helping us overcome obstacles and stay committed to meaningful goals.
My path from incarceration to the pulpit was far from easy. Self-doubt and past mistakes often threatened to derail me. But my passion for sharing God’s message became my fuel, giving me the strength to push through challenges and embrace the calling I felt within.
Today, that passion shapes my work as a pastor, author, coach and public speaker.
I use my story to inspire others to discover their own purpose and hope.
Four Steps to Discover Purpose Through Passion
If you’re searching for your purpose, here are four steps I’ve learned, supported by research and shaped by my own personal experiences.
1. Reflect on What Brings You Joy
For me, this began in the unlikeliest of places—a prison cell. At my lowest point, I reflected on what once brought me joy. I thought about the stories I used to tell and the connections I made through them. Writing and reflecting became a way to reconnect with myself and my passion for storytelling.
Take time to reflect on what lights you up inside. Sometimes, it takes hitting rock bottom to see what truly matters.
2. Notice Your Flow
Flow is a sign you’re aligned with your purpose. For me, it came during Bible studies with inmates. In those moments, time faded away, and I felt alive and fulfilled.
Pay attention to the activities where time disappears and everything feels natural. These moments of flow point toward your purpose.
3. Take Bold Steps
Discovering your purpose requires action. Start with small, meaningful steps—like journaling, volunteering, or sharing your passion with others.
For me, it meant writing down my thoughts, sharing my faith, and building confidence in my ability to make a difference. Over time, those small steps led to bigger ones, like writing my book and speaking to audiences.
Even a small action can be the first bold step toward uncovering your purpose.
4. Transform Pain into Purpose
Some of the most meaningful passions are born from struggle. My pain from incarceration could have defined me, but I chose to use it as fuel for something greater.
While in prison, I realized my pain could help others. Leading Bible studies, sharing my testimony, and writing my book have became ways to turn hardship into hope.
Your struggles don’t have to hold you back. Use them as stepping stones to help others and grow into the person you’re meant to be.
My Message to You
Passion doesn’t just happen to us—it’s placed in us. And when we follow it, it can lead us to our divine calling.
Purpose often begins in moments of struggle, and passion is the light that leads us through.
The Takeaway
My journey taught me that discovering purpose through passion is deeply personal and life-changing. Whether it’s teaching, writing, mentoring, or something else, your passion can uncover your purpose and give you the strength to live it fully.
So, let me ask you:
What brings you joy? What activities make time fly by? Start there, and let your passion guide you to a life of meaning and fulfillment.
It’s never too late to discover your calling and make an impact.
Your Next Step…
Take time now to reflect on the moments when you’ve felt most alive and engaged. Let those insights guide you toward your purpose. No matter where you are in life, there’s always hope—and it begins with following your passion.
